I have stopped and started this blog post so many times in the last week, but this last week has been a very difficult one. I have still been faithfully reading through the book of Acts and am still amazed by the believers in that book. However, this week it seems I could only find momentary relief during my study times and prayer walks. This has just been one HARD week. I could list the circumstances and situations that made it hard but overall it seemed there was this overwhelming feeling of heaviness following us and trying to camp out in our house (I hope this is a relief to find out your pastors have hard weeks too!). I would love to tell you that even in the midst of this hard week I didn’t give into my flesh multiple times, but since that’s not the case, I can tell you my flesh had one BIG PARTYthis last week!!

It has been one of those weeks where I have felt so overwhelmed at times that I was not even sure what to pray when I prayed. Yesterday, I was listening to a message on-line and the speaker re-told a story about a situation where she was asked to pray for another lady and she could not find the words to pray. She told of how she just kept saying the name of Jesus over and over and that was all she prayed. Then, the lady she was praying for began to say the name of Jesus with her over and over and finally, all those standing around them began to say the name of Jesus. Suddenly, the feeling of peace just enteredinto the room, as so many were just simply calling on the name of Jesus.

Sometimes, we have no words to say but by just saying the name of Jesus we are recognizing we have no power to face this and we re-direct our focus on Jesus who is the one who does have all power to face whatever may come against us.

On Sunday morning, during worship at DC Metro Church, I found myself just saying the name of Jesus instead of singing the words to the song. After altar time, when I prayed for a man in a wheelchair in immense pain, I went back to my seat just saying the name of Jesus. After church, when David prayed for the parents of a two-year old little girl who desperately needs healing, I just said the name of Jesus over and over during the prayer.

Each of those moments, I could feel His love surging into the room. It is so amazing to serve a God who when we just call out His name comes running to our rescue!

Yesterday, I had one of those “downward spiral days”. Have you ever had one of those where something goes wrong first thing in the morning and you let it set the tone for the rest of your day?

After yesterday, I was really looking forward to continuing to read through Acts and getting some “God perspective” today. In my study time, the word witness really got my attention in Acts 1:8.

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8 NIV)

Growing up in church, I always associated witnessing to the lost as a horrible gut-wrenching experience of sharing your testimony with a total stranger. In our youth group, we would do Saturday morning visitations. We would knock on the doors of random houses and hand out tracts. Complete torture for a teenager!

In reality, Jesus meant for our witness to be so much more powerful than just knocking on a door and reciting a memorized speech. He intended for how we live our lives to be our witness. Because of the Holy Spirit, Christians would be able to live in such a miraculous way that the world would stop and take notice. We are called to be living examples of a life transformed by Christ’s love. Jesus answered the question of how the world will know we are His followers in John 13:35,

“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:35 NIV)

Our love is what sets us apart. So, as I started my day today, thank the Lord His mercies are new every day, I am conscious of how I show love to my children as I send them off to school. I am intentional of how I love my husband as one of his needs interrupts my plans for the day. I am taking a moment to show love to a complete stranger at Starbucks (I sure go there a lot). Any opportunity I’m given to show His love through my life I’m taking it. I do this in hopes that someone will see my witness for Him shining through and just maybe give Jesus a chance to do the same with their lives!

After dropping my oldest son off at school this morning, I got to sit at Starbucks, for some alone time and study a little. I started reading through the book of Acts. Acts 1:4 really caught my attention, where Jesus is referring to the Holy Spirit.

On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.” (Acts 1:4 NIV)

My birthday just passed and I received some great gifts. My husband, David, is the best gift giver and I don’t give him enough credit for it. He always takes his time to plan and study exactly what to get me. He carefully thinks through a present that is extravagant, but useful and is a gift I would never get myself. Usually, I can’t wait to open the present and start using it.

However, there have been times when I have opened his presents and never used them. David will then keep asking me, “Did you like my gift?”. I may say “yes” and then he will ask a second question, “Then why aren’t you using it?”

This is a lot like the Holy Spirit for us. God has given us a gift, which is the Holy Spirit, and it is an amazing gift! We know that the ultimate gift giver is actually God because in James 1:7, the Bible says, “every good and perfect gift is from above”. With the gift of the Holy Spirit, the Bible says in John 24:49, we are “clothed with power from on high”. The Bible also says, in John 16:12-13, the Holy Spirit will guide us into all truth and tell us what is yet to come. Living the Christian life successfully becomes not only difficult but virtually impossible without the Holy Spirit.

So why do so many Christians never even open this gift or maybe they open the gift but never start using it?

Let’s start using the gift of the Holy Spirit in a greater way in our lives today!

Taryn

That’s one child every 30 seconds. Malaria causes 20 percent of ALL childhood deaths in sub-Saharan Africa

The BITE BACK campaign is mobilizing people around the country to provide mosquito nets to protect children from malaria. Let’s be the generation that ends malaria.

Join DC Sisterhood on July 21 to give towards our first international Be Her Change event! Let’s let a mother know that we care and help save a child’s life through a donation of only $10!

We hope that you will come out and join us in this amazing effort to save a child’s life!!
